To my Darling Baby Girl, on her First Birthday:
You have filled my life with more love than I ever thought possible, and my love for you grows more each day. The moment of your birth when I pulled you up to my chest, I remember feeling like my heart would explode for love of you. I knew in that moment that I would do anything for you. One year later, my love for you has grown exponentially; and when I think back on that first day’s love, it seems so small and so weak compared to the love I have for you today.
I know you love me too, by the way you always reach for me when you are upset. By the way you give me kisses so sweetly. By your hugs and your giggles and your smiles. Even by the way you want to be in the absolute MIDDLE of whatever I am doing. 😉 In your sweet little one-year-old ways, I know that you love me. And every time this realization dawns on me, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I know I make mistakes everyday, but I want to say thank you for your continual trust and forgiveness of me. I do not deserve your love, sweet child. It is a gift. You are a gift.
Here are my promises to you dear daughter, on this your first birthday: This year, I promise to see you as the gift that you are everyday, and to never think of a moment I spend with you as wasted. I promise to embrace your interruptions (even when it means it will take me three hours to finish one task…*sigh*). I promise to correct you consistently and in love so that you may grow up with security in the boundaries I have set for you, and in knowledge of right and wrong. I promise to take your Daddy on dates so that our unity in marriage and in parenting you will be something you can take for granted. I promise to brag on you and to always think that you are the smartest/prettiest/most advanced kid around. (That shouldn’t be hard, because you are!) I promise to pray for you and with you, and I promise to believe in you and in the beautiful plans God has for your life.
No matter how old you get, you will always be my baby. And I will always, Always, ALWAYS be your Mommy.
I love you Ellie Girl. Happy Birthday.
